OpenHeadend was created after a thorough observation of the evolution and trends of the broadcast industry.
OpenHeadend brings a whole new experience for professional TV broadcasting through its entirely modular software solutions. Our expertise and our technology solution allow us to tailor the software to your digital TV projects, your technology needs and customers desires.
Democratization of Internet and IT
IP technologies are increasingly replacing traditional broadcast connections. New TV head-ends are using Ethernet connections between encoders, multiplexers and gateways, instead of DVB-ASI. Most equipments can also be configured via IP (sometimes with additional costs).
The OpenHeadend software platform is completely IP-based. It allows for the reception and processing of Transport Streams without using expensive broadcast connectivity (such as DVB-ASI or SDI).
PC hardware now comes in much lower prices than before. It is also more reliable and powerful than any other custom designs. This is the reason why most broadcasting suppliers secretly or openly base their platforms on an Intel™ motherboard. Embedded platforms also reach a point where they are capable of video processing.
OpenHeadend belongs to a new technological era in the broadcast world. It offers an entirely modular and customizable software, including flexibility and simple configuration at lower costs (both OPEX and CAPEX).
Aspiration to a Flexible Solution
We find customers buying complete hardware platforms for the use of only one particular feature.
This is why OpenHeadend has a license-based model: it allows the customer to only pay for the features they are going to use. The flexibility of the OpenHeadend software also allows the creation of custom workflows.
Professional workflows are becoming more and more complex, and require stacking lots of equipments performing single tasks.
OpenHeadend solutions allow several processes to cohabit within the same, well-dimensioned, hardware. It is, for instance, possible to demultiplex a DVB stream and transcode one of the services to MPEG-4, without the need for an SDI output.
Need for Modernity
Smart phones and tablets are increasingly popular and provide a friendlier user-interface than traditional front panel arrows and small LCD screens.
OpenHeadend products are able to create a wireless configuration network on the fly, allowing mobile devices to act as a management device.
Also, the Content Management Platform can receive orders from management systems via SNMP, or via a RESTful webservice.
